Because a...I've got a lot of reasons, actually.<br />Because armor in D&D is designed to make you harder to hit. Plate mail doesn't make you harder to hit with a machine gun or a blaster. Furthermore, I use a different system for hit points- they don't represent physical damage (see my alternate hit point rules in the side bar.). I think characters die too easy at low level and die too hard at high level.
