Everything was locked in place by completely unnecessary editorializing and theory blarg. I managed to avoid this with BX Mars, but somehow forgot the lesson immediately.

Current Projects

My time is my own these days and I have been putting it to good use working on stuff:

The Planet Eaters. my online graphic novel, I am roughly halfway through the story. I want to take a break to organize and quantify my ideas before I tackle the second half.

http://cosmictalescomics.com/comic/cover/

To this end, the next thing I release, gaming wise, will be a Planet Eaters ICONS supplement detailing Drift Space, a scattering of rogue stars located between the Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxies and the main theater of action in the comic. It will detail heroes and villains, planets and factions, ideas on how to run a cosmic campaign and much more.

IP with a comic and a RPG, can a movie deal be far behind?

Mars:

I'm just reformulating my ideas on my next major Mars RPG project, which will be a complete game somewhat compatable with TSR DND, but its own thing as well. It will come with color art issued in an adult version and a rated R for repressed version. Dying Mars is the working title. I am considering polishing up and coloring the old art and releasing the monster section as a stand alone product suitable for use with OSE.

Samson of Mars, a short novel of Martian adventure is in its fourth draft. I will release it on the kindle.

An excerpt:

Samson risked a glance at the sun. <p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">It may serve the flavor of the campaign to have the quake be of a conventional sort. A natural quake removes a guilty party who can be simply punched away. It’s a cold choice that will add a layer bleak hopelessness to your game as heroes accustomed to finding meaning and bringing justice will have no real opportunities to do either.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">Post Two:

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Running and Playing Quake City:

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Although, as presented here Quake City is Thornhaven, USA, it could be any city real or fictional in any universe.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">GM’s may wish to begin gameplay just before the quake. PCs can be together or separate, engaged in their day to day lives or in the middle of an adventure. The quake will throughly alter the landscape and reframe the context of whatever it is they are doing.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Short solo adventures leading up to the quake may provide an excellent opportunity for character development.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">The quake alters the status quo- so players new to the setting will not be at any particular disadvantage as they learn its specific characteristics. Everyone, including its longtime residents, PCs or otherwise must learn the new normal.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Right now it's series of blog posts detailing an urban based superhero RPG adventure/campaign designed to take place during the aftermath of major tectonic disturbance or similar disaster.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Introduction

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Thornhaven is a brooding, gothic, decaying Rust Belt metropolis. Criminal gangs fight an endless war for control of the city’s rackets unchecked by the corrupt and indifferent police force.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">How it Starts:

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">It’s 1974, October 24th, 4:30 Friday afternoon, happy hour, rush hour. Bridges that should have been rebuilt half a century ago are overpacked with cars. It’s raining. Potholes fill with water and the storm drains roar almost loud enough to drown out the noise of the commute.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">4:31: Giant swarms of birds spontaneously take flight and depart the city.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">4:33:15 The tremors begin. The initial quake lasts for 22 seconds. At its peak, it registers a 6.6 on the Richter scale. The destruction is nearly unimaginable.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">4:34 Tens of thousands are dead. Tens of thousands more lie trapped under the rubble. Two of the cities three major bridges have collapsed. Buildings have fallen over. Skyscrapers lean against one another. Entire city blocks have vanished. In their place stand new mountain born mountain ranges made of rubble and distorted, uplifted streets. A pall of dust hangs in the rain, reducing visibility to zero. The screaming starts. It will go on for a very long time.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">4:41: Mass breakout from the Barnibus Asylum for the criminally insane.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">4:46: Riots at Ajax Penitentiary begin.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">4:50 Somewhere, something is burning.

OTHER STUFF

I'm running a 5e Spelljammer game, although, the WotC set contains so little actual content it could just as easily have been in BX so far. The food generated from their enterprise is stored in a large warehouse. Every year the previous year’s harvest is destroyed. I’m not crazy about the ending of the first storyline, but I might feel differently on a second read.<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Issue 6 launched a new direction as the Elementals become regular superheroes, which they kind of suck at.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"> 7 is about the Elementals fame and thoroughly skippable.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">9-12 are some spy stuff and an adventure dealing with some of the sorcerous fall out from the end of the first story line.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">13 is a one in done dealing with an ice daemon.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">14 is a downtime issue, normally I hate downtime issues, but this one is pretty neat, because it addresses the fact that they’re all actually undead, and can't really do downtime, all of which still seems like pretty cool and original to me thirty-five years on.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">15 is a one and done, kinda, with a fight between Vortex and a dude named the Annihilator, who was one of the supervillains from the first storyline.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">16-17 Comprise a vampire story. the vampire is an overweight nosferatu kinda guy, with some Incel issues. it's pretty straightforward and nothing to get excited about, but enjoyable for what it is.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Willingham is completely at the mercy of his inkers. The early and later issues look best. In between he’s got some amateurs on the job.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">There are a two lines of narration/dialogue that would cause a kerfuffle today.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Bill’s hatred of anti-semites shines through in many places. It comes up a lot.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Overall it's a 6/10

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">There’s also a Justice Machine/Annihilators miniseries in this pile. Justice Machine is an even deeper cut than the Elementals. I'll get to it eventually.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I find supers in a limited world like this, Savage Dragon, BPRD, and pre 1970’s Marvel more enjoyable. I guess I’d include Kirby’s 70’s stuff too, because that shit is set in the big two universes in name only.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Gaming connection: The Destroyers initially appears in two V&V adventures written and illustrated by Willingham. In typical fanboy fashion one of the letters in a later issue access Willingham of staling them from the module. Looking at the creators name is hard, I guess.

Aoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00145284080419502886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2248254789731612355.post-16020859665291483262021-07-19T06:56:00.001-07:002022-02-15T05:15:46.063-08:00Samson of Mars, a novel.
I wrote a novel that takes place in my Mars setting. I will start revisions within the week and I hope to have it up on Amazon by the end of August. Some of you might find this interesting: I wrote the first draft in 19 days after reading that Bradbury did Fahrenheit 451 in 18. he did more words and I assume all his revisions within that time, but still 19 days is pretty good.
Aoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00145284080419502886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2248254789731612355.post-57449888576128606442021-06-04T11:39:00.002-07:002022-02-28T06:05:38.705-08:00Weird Wood: Sagoth Caves
23
<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Sagoth Caves: A series of limestone hills riddled with caves. font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"> There’s a water source somewhere below the city and, ancient machines, the final vestiges of a forgotten irrigation system of unthinkable proportion, bring it to the surface. As a result the city is choked with vegetation. Some of it is dangerous. Nearly all of it is edible if properly processed and some of the plant’s will do their best to eat you as well.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"> This vegetation, of course, provides a basis for the local food chain. Within the confines of Zerzura, the biodiversity of the deep city ruins is matched only by that of Shadow Canyon. Many of the plants and animals living in the city can be found nowhere else in the region or, possibly the entirety of mars.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"> There are wonders of the past and many other valuable things to be found in and under the deep city. Every year, dozens of Martians, red and green, alike, set out from the settlement at the frontiers edge and venture into the ruins in hopes of finding such things. Most don’t come back. Few of those who do escape with more than their lives. Countless stories and rumors tell of treasure found and then lost again the prospectors were slain on their way out of the ruins.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"> One of the great treasures supposedly lost in the ruins is a working food machine. It is almost certain that each of the regions factions sends agents in search of it from time to time. Such a find would surely destroy the current balance of power and spark the Zezura’s first major armed conflict in time out of mind.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"> However stories of lesser treasures have been more than enough to motivate a steady stream of prospectors for time out of mind.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Who ventures into the ruins? Scouts are individuals who have dedicated their lives to exploring the ruins of the city. It should not be assumed that a given scout will know the layout of a <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">particular area. Things age at different rates. Buildings and landmarks appear, disappear and reappear, seemingly at random. Time can flow differently from place to place or from person to person.

There is nothing like civilization in Weird Wood. The tumultuous and dangerous nature of the place make it impossible to settle. The only exception is the Surrendered, a small group of squatters who hide amongst the half submerged towers of the Sunken City.

Gazeteer:

MAP

The Ariel: A cave-riddled, flat-topped sandstone formation at the center of Crystal Meadow. The cliffs leading up to the cloud-veiled summit are sheer and treacherous. Crumbling stone, patches of loose sand, and carnivorous insects only add to the danger. From about half way up on, climbers can hear the static gum of the TV trees above. They are just one of the strange and terrible things atop the mesa.

Badlands: A haunted wasteland. The expanse of scorching heat and bare rock is somehow far larger than it should be and takes many days to cross. Transparent beings, accompanied but the noise of static, flicker in out of sight. What are they?

The Barrier: A dense and seemingly impassable forest. The Barrier surrounds the entirety of Weird Wood. It is resistant to cutting and will not burn. With each step deeper into the forest the forest grows more tangled, dense and actively hostile.

Bone Pond: A crystal clear pond. No visible signs of life. Bones completely cover the bottom.

Castle Nimbus: Dead Wizard’s stronghold in exile. A floating castle perched atop a cloud. A giant burning and unblinking eye, floats beside it. Hidden by the cloud, Castle Nimbus and the Eye are invisible from the surface.
